Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is important for modulating inflammatory response, according to a review study published in Current Pharmaceutical Biotechnology.
"Inflammation plays an important role in health and disease," the report stated. "Most of the chronic diseases of modern society, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, etc. have inflammatory components."
Seeking information about GLA's role as an anti-inflammatory essential fatty acid, researchers reviewed scientific literature, examining the effects of GLA on health and disease. They noted that GLA has been found to benefit patients with rheumatoid arthritis (reducing inflammation, tender joints and morning stiffness). GLA has been found to effectively treat a host of dermatological conditions, including psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
The research also pointed to GLA's apparent anti-cancer effects, noting that studies have found GLA to have tumoricidal activity against breast, colon, pancreatic and brain cancer. GLA also appears to be linked to insulin resistance in diabetes and displays several other health-promoting properties, according to the scientific review. "The present review will emphasize the role of GLA in modulating inflammatory response, and hence its potential applications as an anti-inflammatory nutrient or adjuvant," researchers said.
