It appears that calcium and vitamin D work hand-in-hand to reduce the risk of recurring colorectal tumors, according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
In a multi-center, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial, researchers assessed individual and combined effects of calcium supplementation and vitamin D status on tumor recurrence in 803 subjects.
They found that study subjects who had low levels of vitamin D in their systems saw no change in tumor recurrence when they supplemented with calcium. Subjects who had higher levels of vitamin D in their systems showed a reduced risk of tumor recurrence after calcium supplementation.
Researchers concluded that "calcium supplementation and vitamin D status appear to act largely together, not separately, to reduce the risk of colorectal adenoma recurrence."
