"Broccoli sprout extract is a highly promising substance for bladder cancer prevention," according to researchers at the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY.
Previous studies have suggested eating cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, is associated with a decreased risk for bladder cancer. The latest study, published in the journal Cancer Research, took another look to confirm earlier findings.
Researchers reported: "Isothiocyanates are a well-known class of cancer chemopreventive agents, and broccoli sprouts are a rich source of several isothiocyanates. We report herein that dietary administration to rats of a freeze-dried aqueous extract of broccoli sprouts significantly and dose-dependently inhibited bladder cancer development." Isothiocyanates are formed by glucosinolates found in broccoli.
In the study rats were divided into two groups. The first group acted as a control, the second was given only the broccoli extract to test for safety, and the remaining groups were given a chemical in drinking water that induces bladder cancer.
Two of the groups started the broccoli extract diet two weeks before the carcinogenic chemical was delivered. At study's end, 96% of the animals given only the carcinogenic chemical developed an average of two tumors; about 74% of the rats given a low dose of the broccoli extract developed cancer, with 1.39 tumors per rat; only 38% of the high-dose group developed cancer with an average number of 0.46 tumors per animal.
