Ginseng has Fetched a High Price for its Energizing Properties

March 2004

Everyone knows ginseng as the world’s most famous herbal energizer, but not everyone understands the complexity and rich history of this amazing root. There are many types of ginseng, some of which have been traded like gold, fetching similarly high values throughout the centuries. In Asia, the world’s largest ginseng-consuming region, American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) still fetches incredibly high prices. Here in the U.S. more people prefer the Asian variety (Panax ginseng). Other herbs once widely sold as types of ginseng (Ashwagandha from India and Eleuthero from Siberia) are not true ginsengs but share similar energizing and adaptogenic properties.
