Herbal Supplements Have Calming Effect

January 2011

Feeling tense and uneasy? Several herbs appear to have important calming and soothing effects, according to a review published in the Nutrition Journal. Scientists reviewed 24 studies that investigated several different complementary therapies and combinations. There were 21 randomized controlled trials and three open-label, uncontrolled observational studies. The studies examined the effectiveness of passionflower, lysine, magnesium and St. John’s Wort. The researchers reported that 71% of the trials reviewed showed "a positive direction of evidence." They added that "any reported side-effects were mild to moderate." Three separate studies on passionflower were reported to show positive benefits. Researchers noted that a combination of L-lysine and L-arginine provided strong support. Researchers also said that magnesium "may hold promise" for calming support.
