Supplementation Increases Vitamin C in Breast Milk

October 2005

Nursing mothers can significantly raise the concentration of vitamin C in their breast milk by increasing their vitamin C consumption, according to a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study, conducted on European and African women, found that vitamin C levels in breast milk can be doubled and even tripled by increased intake of vitamin C in women who had low vitamin C concentrations in their breast milk at baseline. The effect was less pronounced in women who had higher concentrations of vitamin C in their breast milk at baseline, suggesting that the body may self-regulate milk vitamin C levels.
