Multi Use Before Pregnancy May Reduce Preterm Birth Risk

March 2003

Multivitamin intake before conception may help reduce the number of premature births, according to a report in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill assessed data that had been derived from 2,010 women who participated in the Pregnancy, Infection and Nutrition Study. The women had been recruited for the initial study at 24 to 29 weeks of pregnancy. Researchers found that women who took multivitamins regularly prior to conception had a reduced risk of preterm birth. Beginning a multivitamin regimen during pregnancy seemed to be of little benefit in reducing the risk.
