DHA in Formula Supports Infant Eye Health

May 2010

Adding the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to infant formula appears to support the visual acuity of the infants, says a new clinical trial. Doses of 0.32%, 0.64% and 0.96% DHA promoted eye health in infants, compared to infants fed non-supplemented formula, according to results published in the prestigious American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. "The DHA Intake and Measurement of Neural Development (DIAMOND) study is the first double-masked, randomized, controlled, parallel-group, prospective, dose-response study of DHA in term infant formula," wrote the researchers, led by Eileen Birch. Birch and co-workers enrolled 244 healthy formula-fed infants between one and nine days of age. The infants were randomly assigned to one of the four formula groups. When the infants reached 12 months, measures of the clarity of the infants’ vision showed that those fed the DHA-supplemented formulas had greater support.
