Vitamin D Appears to Support Cardio Health

June 2010

As more discoveries are made concerning the health benefits of vitamin D, we find that D goes way beyond supporting healthy bones. In fact, one of the most recent scientific reviews of previously conducted studies suggests that vitamin D may also support a healthy cardiovascular system. To help clarify the role of vitamin D in supporting cardiovascular health, researchers analyzed 17 studies published between 1966 and 2009. The results of their review appear in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Researchers found signs of vitamin D support for cardiovascular health in 14 of the studies. Evidence to date "suggests that vitamin D supplementation at moderate to high doses may have beneficial effects" in promoting cardiovascular health, according to researcher Lu Wang, M.D., Ph.D. of the Division of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The scientists say more research is needed to better explain vitamin D’s role in cardio support.
