Greater Role For L-Arginine In Promoting Cardiovascular Health

September 2005

The amino acid L-arginine promotes a healthy supply of oxygen to the heart and now scientists believe it may help maintain healthy homocysteine levels in the body. Unhealthy levels of homocysteine, a caustic amino acid metabolite, can damage blood vessels. Researchers tested the effects of a daily 12 g dose of L-arginine on 16 middle-age men. While they were looking for changes in blood pressure, researchers found significant changes in homocysteine levels. This study, researchers said, is the first to show a substantial effect on homocysteine levels with oral L-arginine administration.
