People with a vitamin B-12 deficiency may be at greater risk of developing osteoporosis, according to research published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
Scientists from Tufts University, Harvard Medical School and Boston University measured bone mineral density and vitamin B-12 levels in more than 2,500 men and women from the Framingham Osteoporosis Study. They found that both men and women with low B-12 levels had lower average bone mineral density. The authors of the study concluded that B-12 may be important for both groups in maintaining strong bones.
Researchers further noted that certain individuals, namely older people, cannot absorb B-12 from foods easily and would benefit from eating breakfast cereals fortified with the vitamin or from taking B-12 supplements.
