GliSODin can protect against DNA damage and help prevent oxidative cell stress, according to researchers in Ulm, Germany. GliSODin is a new formulation consisting of wheat gliadin chemically combined with a vegetal preparation of superoxide dismutase (SOD).
The prospective, double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, published in Free Radical Research involved 20 healthy volunteers. Each participant was exposed to 100% oxygen for a total of 60 minutes. After hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) exposure (100% oxygen at pressures greater than normal atmospheric pressure), DNA tail moment and isoprostane levels were checked. They were significantly lower in the group that received the GliSODin formulation.
The DNA tail moment provides the most stable estimates for determining DNA damage. Isoprostane (derived from free-radical oxidation) concentrations can help in assessing oxidative stress, which is implicated in all degenerative disease and is the number one cause of cardiovascular disease.
Researchers discovered that the GliSODin formulation protected against DNA damage and also reduced blood isoprostane levels, deeming it useful as an antioxidant.
