Glutamine May Protect GI Tract

November 2005

New research suggests that the amino acid glutamine may have a protective effect in the gastrointestinal tract. Seeking to determine the bioactivity of a fish protein isolate, British researchers tested the protein in a number of different experimental models of gastrointestinal injury in laboratory rats and human colonic cells. They found that the fish protein isolate possessed biological activity in a variety of models and that glutamine was the single amino acid most responsible, accounting for approximately 40% of total bioactivity seen.
