Calcium, folic acid could save health care costs
A study released at a House subcommittee hearing on the cost
savings and health benefits of selected dietary supplements
projected a $15 billion reduction in health care costs over
a five-year period from the use of calcium and folic acid.
The study found that five selected supplements—omega-3
fatty acids, glucosamine and saw palmetto along with calcium
and folic acid—could make a significant impact on health
care costs while positively affecting consumers’ health
status. The $15 billion figure only pertains to calcium and
folic acid usage. More savings would logically arise from the
use of the other three supplements. |
