Dr. Daniel Martinez Puig is the Research and Development Manager at Bioiberica S.A., based in Barcelona, Spain. Martinez: Absolutely. Our healthcare tends to focus on joint health, muscular health, bone health; but we overlook the tendons, which hold it all together. We have over 4,000 tendons throughout our bodies. Every move we make is dependent on tendons.
Tendons are the elastic bands of tissue that connect muscle to bones and joints. Think of them as rubber bands. Everyone has seen old rubber bands that have been stretched too far, that have perhaps dried out and started to crack. Tendons are very much like rubber bands.
Martinez: The trouble with tendons, and the reason there are few options for both consumers and clinicians, is that they are primarily avascular, meaning there's very little blood supply available to them. Without good blood supply, it's difficult to get nutrients, etc., to these tissues.
Here at Bioiberica we decided to take an alternate approach and deliver the actual substances that build healthy tendons in the first place. If we supply the body what it needs to build and maintain healthy tendons, then the concern of delivering agents directly to them through the blood supply is less of an issue.
Martinez: Tendons are made primarily of collagen, but not the collagen most people are familiar with. Most collagen supplements are collagen type 2, but 95 percent of the collagen in our tendons is collagen type 1. We produce this in our bodies, but research shows that as we age, our metabolism shifts and we begin producing less type 1. TendoFIT supplies collagen type 1, the precise type of collagen the tendons need to remain strong.
While collagen provides much of the structure and strength of the tendons, mucopolysaccharides (MPS) provide the "glue" that holds them together and allows them to stretch, flex, bend and maintain their resilience. TendoFIT supplies naturally derived MPS to support this need.
Martinez: It's a relatively simple concept but it has never been done before in an effective manner. The materials must be in the right form for the body to recognize, absorb and utilize; and that's what we've been able to deliver in TendoFIT. The key is collagen type I. As I noted previously, most supplemental collagen is 'type II', which offers no benefit for the tendons. Collagen type I is what the tendons need, and TendoFIT supplies it in a manner that studies suggest can really make a difference. In addition, we include vitamin C, which the body needs to produce collagen, and collagen needs to maintain itself.
Martinez: We began with in vitro studies that were incredibly encouraging. Then, we moved on to observational and clinical studies that confirmed what we saw in the lab. A study published in 2009 showed that TendoFIT produced noticeable and measurable results in a variety of parameters among those receiving the capsules compared to controls. Evaluations were made both through physical examination and subjective self-assessment; and throughout the study at 30, 60 and 90 days, those taking TendoFIT reached scores up to 50 percent higher than those not taking the supplement.
