Socrates famously said, "The more I learn, the more I learn how little I know." This is certainly true in the fields of human biology, wellness and nutrition. Socrates' most devout student, Hippocrates, said, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food;" and while human beings have done just that since the beginning, we are still learning about how nature's bounty benefits our bodies and our lives.

Flavonoids (or bioflavonoids) are a perfect example. First called "Vitamin P" by Nobel Prize winner Albert Szent-Gyorgyi in the 1930s, this group of plant-derived nutrients includes some of the most common elements in the human diet. And yet, only today are we beginning to understand their potential powers. While these ubiquitous molecules may have remained hidden for thousands of years, they've suddenly become a hot topic among researchers and natural health practitioners eager to learn more and apply this new knowledge for the benefit of mankind.

Luteolin: The Flavonoid of the Future

Ask the average person on the street to name a bioflavonoid and you would be lucky if they identify one; yet scientists have discovered over 4,000! While public knowledge of bioflavonoids is limited, their potential to promote human health is not; and perhaps nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the case of Luteolin.

Luteolin is one of the most widespread flavonoids in nature. Technically classified as a flavone, a type of flavonoid characterized by a specific structure, Luteolin is found in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs including celery, artichoke, thyme, citrus fruits and more. It is set to become "the flavonoid of the future" thanks to a rapidly increasing body of evidence suggesting big potential benefits from this little-recognized nutrient.

A quick search on PubMed returns over 2,000 scientific papers focused on Luteolin, with over 900 of those published in the past five years. It's the subject of ongoing research at the U.S. Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and it's been the focus of news reports by major media outlets around the world. This level of scientific interest is rarely seen in nutritional science and indicates a trajectory that will undoubtedly result in Luteolin claiming its rightful place in the pantheon of modern nutraceuticals.

Luteolin at the Cellular Level

Much of the emerging research on Luteolin suggests biological benefits so fundamental to our health and well-being that the effects can be applied to a wide variety of common health concerns at every stage of life. According to these studies, Luteolin may work through a variety of pathways to nourish and defend specific cells within the body and the structures within those cells.

Take, for instance, the mitochondria—the energy center of every cell. Mitochondrial function, and the decline thereof, is now believed by many scientists to be a primary cause of what we call "aging." This "mitochondrial paradigm" or "mitochondrial theory of aging" is closely tied to the "free radical theory" in that free radicals are produced within cells by the energy-producing function of the mitochondria.

As the mitochondria produce energy in the form of ATP, they also create "reactive oxygen species" (ROS) or free radicals that can damage cells and tissues from the inside out. Cellular antioxidants like glutathione and superoxide dismutase then come in to deactivate or stabilize the free radicals, rendering them harmless. A number of reports suggest that Luteolin may defend against mitochondrial aging by activating these cellular antioxidants.

The mitochondrial-supporting, cell-defending actions of Luteolin could have profound benefits for key structures and functions within the body that require high amounts of energy—areas like the heart, the lungs and the brain, for instance, and the functions governed by these critical organs. In fact, scientists have reported positive outcomes using Luteolin in cardiovascular tissue, brain tissue and lung tissue along with corresponding positive results on the functions they control.

The brain is one of the most exciting areas of investigation relating to Luteolin's defense of mitochondria. This is because brain cells are particularly susceptible to amyloid proteins, which can accumulate in brain tissue and disrupt mitochondrial function. According to research, Luteolin may help defend against the buildup of amyloid proteins while simultaneously defending the mitochondria from free radicals as described above, making it a unique, multifaceted natural product for cognitive nourishment and support.

Luteolin in Brain & Neurological Health

The brain is central to the neurological system, and while cellular energy and mitochondrial function are critical to neurological health, scientists believe Luteolin's unique benefits in this realm are also attributable to yet another remarkable method of action.

Many neurological functions—including memory and cognition, healthy motor function, learning and more—are influenced by signaling molecules known as cytokines, which have wide-reaching effects and can be both harmful and helpful. A wide variety of common neurological concerns at every age are now believed to be associated with the detrimental effects of specific cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6). Cytokines like IL-6 can inflame cells and interfere with healthy functioning.

A number of published reports demonstrate that Luteolin has the ability to suppress the production of IL-6 within microglia, a type of cell within the brain and the spinal cord responsible for, among other things, keeping the central nervous system (CNS) free of harmful plaque buildup. Further reports suggest that this suppressive activity can help maintain healthy cognitive functions like learning and memory in animal models. Anecdotal evidence suggests these benefits apply to humans as well, and studies are underway to confirm these results.

Similarly, Luteolin has been shown to protect another type of brain and CNS cell, known as astrocytes, from the harmful effects of another cytokine known as interleukin-1-beta (IL-1β). Astrocytes are the most abundant cells in the human brain and are responsible for a variety of functions. They help maintain healthy brain tissue, support the cells that form the blood-brain barrier and promote survival functions within neurons. IL-1β can cause neuronal death, and astrocytes are the first line of defense. According to scientists, Luteolin promotes healthy astrocyte function in the presence of IL-1β by decreasing the release of ROS (free radicals) in astrocytes stimulated by IL-1β while simultaneously increasing cellular antioxidants.

There's no arguing the science. Over 2,000 published studies combined with hundreds of anecdotal reports from individuals around the world demonstrate the power of Luteolin. But not all supplements will perform as the evidence suggests.

The fact is, Luteolin is not bioavailable on its own. It requires the presence of other naturally occurring bioflavonoids in order to be metabolized by the body and reach the cells in active form. In nature, Luteolin is often accompanied by rutin, which "unlocks" its potential to promote human health. New Swanson Ultra Luteolin Complex delivers pure, natural Luteolin and Rutin in perfect balance for optimal biological benefit.

If you or your loved ones are struggling to maintain healthy cognitive function, if neurological nourishment is important to your daily life, you may find Luteolin Complex to be the answer for successful nutraceutical support. Add Luteolin to your daily regimen and put the "flavonoid of the future" to work for you today.
