Lee Swanson, President of Swanson Health Products®
Dear Friends and Valued Customers,
Last year I began receiving requests for a new healthy solution that hearkens back to the days of my youth, yet in a new and intriguing form. It’s called magnesium oil, and to me it’s like taking the age-old practice of bathing in Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) out of the bathroom and making it convenient for our busy modern lives. But the great thing about magnesium oil is that it can be applied anywhere, anytime, without interrupting your daily activity.
I admit I had not been aware of this new development until many of you wrote or called to suggest we look into it. My trusted advisor Dr. Hendel, advocate of Himalayan Crystal Salt, was more than familiar with the substance and eager to share her experience. On the following pages, she introduces us to the wonders of magnesium oil from the world famous Zechstein Sea Well in Veendam, the Netherlands, where she guided our own product development manager, Tom Audette, on a personal tour.
Over 250 million years ago, the ancient Zechstein Sea extended across Europe from what is now northern England to Germany. Throughout the ages, the sea flooded and evaporated in four cycles, leaving rich deposits of minerals and natural elements behind. Today, nearly one mile beneath the surface of the earth in the Netherlands lies the world’s oldest and most pristine natural magnesium chloride deposit ever discovered. This is the Zechstein Sea Well, the source of Swanson Ultra® Magnesium Oil.
Dr. Med. Barbara Hendel, Munich, Germany
Dr. Hendel: Well, as you and your customers know, I’ve focused my entire career on integrating natural products into my healthcare protocols as much as possible. For the last decade I’ve specialized in the use of mineral salts. And while I’m certainly most recognized for my Himalayan Crystal Salt, I’ve employed many other products as well.
Magnesium salts have been used in both traditional and “modern” healthcare for a wide variety of applications. Of course Epsom salt, which is magnesium sulfate, is the most recognizable. Other salts of magnesium, carbonate and phosphate, are used in homeopathic remedies. I’ve used all of these agents in my practice.
I’m so thrilled about Magnesium Oil because it is an excellent and affordable solution that offers a convenient alternative and it can be used selectively; in other words, rather than soaking your entire body in a salt bath, you can use Magnesium Oil on an isolated area—say, for example, a patch of dry skin. You can put it exactly where you want it.
Dr. Hendel: Magnesium is absolutely essential to every cell in the body. Half of all the magnesium in our bodies is found in our bones, about 1 percent of it is found in the blood, and the rest is distributed throughout our muscles and other tissues. It plays important roles in maintaining the stability and integrity of our nerves and our cellular membranes, and it’s a necessary component for over 300 biochemical reactions. Due to its roles in nerves and muscles, magnesium is often used for support in these areas.
Swanson® Product Development Manager Tom Audette toured the Zechstein Sea Well with Dr. Barbara Hendel and Ir. (Dave) Janse, Mineralogist for Zechstein Minerals BV, Veendam, the Netherlands.
Dr. Hendel: Magnesium Oil is very new as a product in this form, but its raw material has been recognized for over 30 years. Magnesium Oil comes from natural underground mineral deposits called Bischofite. The Russians actually pioneered the commercial mining of Bischofite after discovering a large deposit in the southwestern Volgograd Region in the early 1960s. It has a wide variety of industrial applications, which dominated the market for many years.
At the time of the Volgograd discoveries, scientists were already aware of the Bischofite deposits in the underground sites of the ancient Zechstein Sea in the Netherlands, but those deposits remained untapped. In the early 1970s, the Zechstein Seabed was tapped and commercial production of mineral products from the Zechstein Well began in earnest about 10 years later. It was soon discovered that the magnesium chloride available at this source was the purest in the world. After years of success with industrial applications, the decision was made to begin investigations into other areas of human use, particularly topical applications. The Magnesium Oil we know today was the result of this work. It’s only been available for about five years now, but it is rapidly coming into widespread use.
It’s important for people to understand that Magnesium Oil isn’t actually an oil; rather, it’s a supersaturated solution of magnesium chloride and pure water. The magnesium gives it a slippery feel, which is why it is called Magnesium Oil. It absorbs readily into the skin, leaving no oily residue, no scent, no sign whatsoever that it has been applied.
For millions of years the Zechstein magnesium deposit remained undisturbed about one mile beneath the surface of the earth (1,500–2,000 meters), where it is protected from modern pollution. Today this pure magnesium chloride is solution-mined using nothing but pure water to produce the world’s finest Magnesium Oil. Water is pumped down under intense pressure to the magnesium layer. The magnesium dissolves into the water and the solution is then pumped to the surface where it is collected and refined into pure magnesium chloride. Zechstein Minerals BV is committed to responsible mining and maintains a variety of ecological programs to minimize the environmental impact of its operations.
Dr. Hendel: The well is located near the town of Veendam, an agricultural community in the northeast of the Netherlands. It’s a beautiful area that is much less populated than the big cities of the west. The land is pristine. That is important, because when the land we inhabit is clean and pollution-free, we know that the earth below is the same. The Zechstein Seabed lies deep underground where it has remained untouched by modern pollution. Tom Audette and I were fascinated to see how the mine operates, and we were impressed by the science and technology used to demonstrate and ensure absolute purity. I was surprised to learn that the mining does actually affect the surface level of the area immediately around it. But I was quite pleased by the remarkable programs they have in place to give back to the land and contribute to the environmental health of the region. After visiting, I can truly say that using Magnesium Oil from the Zechstein Well is something we can feel good about.
Dr. Hendel: First of all, it’s simply fantastic for the skin. I recommend it be applied after bathing or showering, anywhere you want to moisturize and nourish your skin. As I said earlier, the advantage is that it can be applied directly where needed, eliminating the need for a total-body immersion. I recommend that those interested do a little research online to learn more about this excellent new alternative.
Dr. Hendel: It’s my pleasure. I’ve received such wonderful responses to my work with Swanson Health Products, and I know your customers are going to love our new Magnesium Oil.

Magnesium salts have been used for health, wellness and beauty for hundreds of years. In fact, Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) got its name from Epsom, England, where it was discovered in the 17th century. Magnesium chloride, the form of magnesium mined at the Zechstein seawell in the Netherlands, is not Epsom salt, but it does have similar properties and applications.
The difference between magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride lies in their chemical structure, a sulfate being a molecule bonded to a sulfate ion and a chloride being a molecule bonded to a chlorine ion. Sulfates, however, are inorganic compounds while chlorides exist both as organic and inorganic compounds. The magnesium chloride in my Magnesium Flakes is a pure organic compound mined directly from the ancient Zechstein Sea approximately one mile beneath the earth’s surface. It is not chemically synthesized, treated or altered in any way. Therefore, I believe this form of magnesium to be much more natural and thus superior to traditional Epsom salt (magnesium suflate).
While Magnesium Oil delivers magnesium chloride for on-the-spot use, new Magnesium Chloride Flakes offer an easy way to apply mind and muscle-soothing magnesium to the entire body at once. Immerse yourself in a bath of Magnesium Chloride Flakes and experience the same invigorating sensation many people pay hundreds of dollars for at fancy spas.
