Supplements containing conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) helped healthy overweight adults lose weight and maintain lean body mass for two years, according to the results of a study published in the Journal of Nutrition.
The study extended work done during a previous trial in which researchers gave 3.4 g of CLA or a placebo to 157 volunteers for 12 months. In that study, the people who took CLA saw a reduction in body fat mass of up to 9%. The researchers used Tonalin® CLA.
In the new study, 134 of the participants from the first study were given 3.4 g of CLA for another 12 months. Those who received CLA in the first study maintained their body weight and lean body mass, while those who took the placebo in the first study lost body weight and body fat mass in the second study.
"CLA helped study participants keep off lost weight while maintaining lean body mass, which keeps the metabolism strong, and burning calories, thereby reducing the chances of gaining weight," wrote study manager Jean-Michel Gaullier, Ph.D.
