Boswellia Serrata Extract Relieves Joint Discomfort

June 2007

A botanical extract derived from the ancient Ayurvedic medicinal herb Boswellia serrata provided significant relief from joint discomfort among people with osteoarthritis, according to a study published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology.

Boswellia has been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. An ancient system of health care, Ayurvedic medicine is native to the Indian subcontinent. The word "Ayurveda" is a compound of the word ayus, meaning "life" or "life principle," and the word veda refers to a system of knowledge. In essence, Ayurveda roughly translates as the "knowledge of life."

In the randomized, controlled clinical trial, researchers randomly assigned 1,000 mg of Boswellia serrata extract per day for six months to patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. To measure the effects of the treatments, the researchers recorded WOMAC scores for the subjects at baseline, monthly interviews and at the end of the trial.

After two months, the group taking a daily dose of Boswellia serrata extract showed statistically significant improvement in pain, stiffness and difficulty in performing daily activities. In fact, the improvement lasted until one month after the patients stopped taking the extract.
