Skin damage from the ultraviolet rays of the sun is a major concern today. Anyone who will be out in the sun for any length of time should wear appropriate clothing and apply sunscreen creams. Now you can expand your protective regimen by supplementing with carotenoids.
Researchers at the Institute for Experimental Dermatology, University Witten-Herdecke in Germany studied carotenoid supplementation in 36 subjects. Over a 12-week period the 36 took natural beta-carotene supplements at 24 mg per day or a mixed carotenoid supplement containing 8 mg each of beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene, or a placebo.
Researchers found that during the 12-week period the serum beta-carotene concentration increased three to fourfold in the beta-carotene group and in the mixed carotenoid group, the serum concentration of each of the three carotenoids increased one to threefold. The intake of either beta-carotene or a mixture of carotenoids similarly increased total carotenoids in the skin. The intensity of erythema (in this case sunburn) 24 hours after irradiation was diminished in both groups that received carotenoids and was significantly lower after the full 12 weeks of supplementation.
