Why Do Some Swanson Products Contain Rice Flour?

Question: I would like to know why so many Swansons products have rice flour in the (other ingrediants) label. Within the last couple of months Consumers Reports Magizine had an article on rice containing arsenic. I have not been able to take Swanson products due to being allergic to rice.

Contrary to what Consumer Reports might have you believe, not all supplement manufacturers are the same or take the same precautions when it comes to safety and quality. Our manufacturers are all required to test each product for heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic), so you can be assured that our products are all safe and do not contain arsenic. In fact you can read all about our quality control measures here.

As far as our use of rice flour, it’s difficult to find a flow agent which would be low in all common allergens making it perfectly suitable for the general population. Some people also have difficulty with millet, potato starch, maltodextrin, magnesium stearate, stearic acid, microcrystalline cellulose, silica. It’s hard to find one excipient which is OK for everyone, but they are an important piece of the manufacturing process that helps us keep quality very high while keeping our prices very low.
