The United Blood Services’ Bloodmobile visited Swanson Health Products’ headquarters this past Wednesday. We had approximately 40 employees make a donation in the eight hours the Bloodmobile was on our campus!
It was the third time this year that the Bloodmobile had been parked in the Swanson Health Products (SHP) parking lot and when I saw it, my first thought was, “How fortunate are SHP employees that we don’t have to take a lot of time out of our day to give blood? It’s so convenient—we are just lucky!”
This led me to question my co-worker’s motivation for donating. Do they donate because it’s convenient or are there other reasons for giving? I asked—and here is what they had to say:
“I donate to save lives--and I really like the cookies/snacks you get after you are done!” Kari G.
“It makes me feel good to help other people. I also love the reward points that I earn.” Maribeth S.
“I needed an oil change.” John R.
“It’s the right thing to do; saving lives. Also, my husband and mother have received donated blood.” Jan H.
“People need it, and it’s just something that I’ve always done—so I continue to donate.” Tom A.
When it was my turn to give, I had a lot of questions for the technicians. They patiently explained that for every one person that donates, three people can benefit. (A 1:3 ratio is pretty great, if you ask me). Typically people in surgery or in emergency situations will use the red blood cells, burn victims will receive plasma and cancer patients get the platelets.
For me it’s a no-brainer. People’s lives depend on donations, I can spare the pint of blood and someday, someone I love may need blood. I look at it like I’m just paying it forward.
Do you donate blood? Why do you do it? Post a comment below and I will reward one randomly selected participant with a $25.00 gift certificate!
