Natural Health Choices for my Family

Healthy Breakfast Ideas from Swanson Health Products

Ever wanted to know what vitamins, supplements and healthy foods the employees at Swanson Health Products use? Here’s your chance to peek inside an employee order and find out (and win it all)! Today we get to look inside Maggie's employee order...

One of my favorite things about working at Swanson Health Products is employee order day.  Once a week, we get to buy our favorite items at a huge discount.  My order is usually full of natural organic foods and affordable vitamins.  The items I buy most often include the breakfast items I've listed below.

When I get to work in the morning, I have a pretty simple routine: fire up the computer, check sales from the previous day, make breakfast.  When it comes to breakfast, oatmeal is a great choice.  I'm pretty picky about mine, so I'm happy to share my "recipe."

Organic OatsFirst I pour a small serving (maybe 1/3 C) of Bob's Red Mill Organic Extra Thick Rolled Oats
into a decent size cereal bowl.  The Extra Thick Rolled Oats are my favorite.  Instant oatmeal is too thin for me.  It reminds me of paste.  I like Steel Cut Oats as well, but I'm not patient enough for the cooking time.  I top the oats off with enough hot water to cover the oats.  They should be floating by not swimming.  I sprinkle the water and oats combo with Swanson Ultra Himalayan Crystal Salt.

The next step is to determine what type of day it is.  For regular days (Mon., Tues., Thurs.), I add a couple teaspoons of Eden Foods Organic Dried Cranberries.  I microwave the oat mixture for two minutes and add some organic raw nuts.  Usually I add Swanson Organic Walnuts or raw organic almonds, but in a pinch, any nuts will do.  On extra special days (Employee order days, my birthday, Fridays), I substitute Swanson Organic Unsulphured Turkish Apricots for the cranberries and use Now Foods Almond Crunch Clusters for the nuts.  I top off the delicious mixture with a sprinkle of Swanson Organic Cinnamon.

Organic CashewsMy morning routine continues with a quick visit from my boss.  He stops by to discuss the important matters of the day.  During our visit he usually has a handful of Swanson Organic Raw Whole Cashews.  I keep a bag on hand in my office.  These are the best cashews I've ever tasted.  I was tentative about trying them because they don't have salt.  Come to find out, the natural cashew taste is delicious without salt.

Swanson Easter Basket Ideas

One great benefit of working at Swanson Health Products is employee order day.  Once a week, we get to purchase discount vitamins.  Today I placed an order that I will use this weekend to fill Easter baskets.

It was easy for me to shop for the women in our family.  For my mom I focused on calcium and bone health.  Her favorite calcium is SW810 Swanson Calcium Citrate and Vitamin D.  My sister loves to cook, so her basket is full of natural organic foods and spices.

I'm struggling with what to purchase for my dad and husband.  We have so many men's health products, it's hard to choose.  Which ones are your favorite?

Nutritional Health Products Lobbying in Washington

Friday, May 28, 2010 by Maggie McCalip
Last week, I joined fellow Swanson Health Products employee Kari G. on a trip to Washington D.C.  It was my first attempt at lobbying.  Kari and I joined other members of the Coalition for Dietary Supplements to meet with Senate and House staff members.  We wanted to communicate our position on segments of the McCain bill that were being considered as amendments to an upcoming food safety bill.  We are proud of our company and the vitamins and health supplements industry and wanted to make our opinion known to our elected representatives.

Overall, I was impressed with the time and attention given to us.  The staff members seemed open to listening to our side of the story.  It was interesting to me that some staff members seemed to operate from the assumption that health supplement products are not regulated, while others had a full understanding of the FDA and FTC's regulatory authority over our industry

One common theme we heard from multiple offices was that our consumers are vocal.  People are interested in natural health and nutritional health products, and they don't want congress to limit their natural health choices.  Thank you for being the true voice of our industry, and please keep up the good work!
