Living Healthier

Hello! I'm Kerry.

I am a thirty-something mother to a two year old with a farmer for a husband. I whole heartedly believe that supplements have their place in a person's lifestyle.  The trick is, figuring out what your body needs and making sure you get the right amount.  (What works for one may not work for another.) And of course, finding a natural supplement company you can trust to supply a quality product is a must.  (I recommend Swanson Health Products.  Perhaps you've heard of it?)

Post baby, I am a certain amount of pounds overweight and I'm ready to lose it. Also, post baby, I've become much more aware of what my family is eating. I'm trying to buy organic products that aren't stripped of their nutrient goodness, but as life happens, I don't always do as well as I could. I'll try to keep you up to date with new ways to keep the whole family healthy as I continue to discover them myself.  Stay tuned!

My Top 5 Favorite Products (Kerry's Employee Order Giveaway) [CLOSED]

Thursday, October 27, 2011 by Kerry A.

My Favorite ProductsEver wanted to know what vitamins, supplements and healthy foods the employees at Swanson Health Products use? Here’s your chance to peek inside an employee order and find out (and win it all)!

I recently placed an order for Alba Botanica TerraTint Lipbalm. Some natural lip balms are rough and hard to apply.  This lip balm went on smooth and creamy, has just the right amount of sheen to it, and moisturizes my lips as well. It also contains sunscreen!  (Ranging from SPF8 to 18).  One other thing I love about this lip balm is that Alba Botanica has resisted the trend to add mint or menthol to their products. I'm very happy with my purchase and am ordering a couple more tubes, one to keep at my desk and one to keep in my medicine cabinet.  Swanson carries six colors to choose from.  My favorite is "Bloom".

Swanson Ultra EyesAlive is most likely my all time favorite product. This is the first product I ever ordered from Swanson and I still use it today. I am a contact wearer.  This sometimes coincides with eye irritations.  EyesAlive helps keep my eyes in tip top shape.  After using it for six months, I had my regular eye appointment. My doctor thought my eyes looked very healthy and I told him what I was taking and how I thought it was helping. The combination of ingredients in this product has left me with very happy results and I have had many happy optometrist appointments since!  Don't believe how great this product is?  Read other people's reviews on this product.

My next favorite pick is VitaFusion MultiVites Gummy Vitamins for Adults. My husband has terrible gag reflexes when it comes to swallowing larger pills.  And of course, multi-vitamin pills tend to be one of the bigger pills. After I bought him these gummies his complaining has turned to other topics, and he takes his multi-vitamins regularly. He’s been a happy man ever since!

Next up is Barleans Total Omega Swirl.  As I mentioned above with the Gummy Vitamins. My husband has issues swallowing big pills. So when he wanted to get more Omega 3’s into his diet, I bought a bottle of this Omega Orange Swirl Cream! It tastes good to him, therefore he’s more apt to taking it more regularly, hence reaping the benefits, and he doesn't have the regular issue of capsule size. It comes in seven flavors.  I bought Orange Cream.

Because Swanson carries much more than just healthy foods and supplements, I also pick up my contact lens cleaner at a much cheaper price than I could at my local drugstore. Opti-Free Supra Clens - Daily Protein Remover. I'm able to get my supplements and my odds ad ends all from one store!

To get a shot at winning my employee order (with all the products I listed above), leave a comment below telling me what your top 5 (or more/less) favorite products are
. I'll randomly select a winner and notify him/her next week. Good luck! (Full giveaway rules here.)

How I Discovered Supplements Are NOT All Hype (After Months of Being Sick)

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 by Kerry A.

I can't believe there are people out there that still think vitamins and supplements are all hype! It's true, before I started working at Swanson Health Products, I barely managed to take a multi-vitamin, let alone the specific women's health vitamins I knew I should be taking.  But as happens to everyone who works here, you slowly start gathering knowledge on the subject and it's hard to remain ignorant.  Obviously, what works for one person may not work for another, but in today's day and age there is a definite place for vitamins and supplements in our daily lives. Let's face it.  Even if you're eating low fat and healthy foods, you may not be eating all the right food combinations that give your body everything it needs to work at peak performance.  Supplements help to fill that void.

Last year, I spent a large portion of the winter season ill.  It became a big joke in the office because I was always stuffed up, puffy eyed, and just generally miserable.  I went to the doctor after 30 days of feeling sick, and he told me I "probably" had walking pneumonia, and "Here is a prescription that should clear up whatever it is, even if it's not pneumonia."  Well, I felt better the first day, but by the time the Z-pack was finished, I felt as awful as I did the day I went in.  So I suffered for another month.  It was only after drinking the recommended dosage of 1000mg Vitamin C packets from Emergen-C daily did I finally work my way back to personal wellness.

Obviously, my everyday diet, and even the ever so "powerful" prescription drug, didn't help me back to wellness.  Ever since, I keep Emergen-C on hand, and when my two year old or someone in my office starts to come down with something, I'll add it to my daily regimen.  So far, I've managed to thwart a hand full of "the icky stuff" this year.

How to Eat Smart at a Party

Tuesday, October 26, 2010 by Kerry A.
Is eating smart at a party even possible?  Well, there are many books out there that say yes.  My cousin is having a party at his lake place this weekend, so I'm going to have to go to this party thinking strategically.  But seriously, if you like to eat, how do you really avoid overindulging on all those tasty party foods and ruining all the healthy weight watching you've been working so hard on? Here are some tips I've picked up over the years that seem to work for me:
  • Choose guacamole over salsa for your chips, just don't eat too much.  If you don't know if there will be any, bring some.  Guacamole gives you substance and makes you feel full  or satisfied whereas you'll munch on many a chip and salsa before you reach the same conclusion.
  • Pickles over olives. I just read about this one. Because the pickle is bigger and it takes longer for you to eat, you'll feel more full.
  • Popcorn.  Popcorn has been my lifesaver at many a party.  It's low calorie and you can hold a handful at a time while you mingle, making you feel like you've eaten more than you really have.  Even if it's the full butter kind, it's still better than eating other fatty snack foods.
  • Sangria rather than high sugar drinks, such as margaritas, and wine over beer. If you don't drink alcohol, buy organic tea and bring it along...just be sure to bring some to share!
  • Bring your own snacks. If you know the hosts won't be serving anything healthy, bring your own munchies like raw organic nuts, organic pumpkin seeds or other natural organic foods.

What's Your Vitamin and Supplement Regimen?

Friday, October 22, 2010 by Kerry A.
Because I work at Swanson Health Products, I get a lot of natural health questions thrown my way.  I'm also asked tons of questions about what sort of vitamins and supplements I take and what I take them for?  So here's what I'm taking and why.  (Note:  the why has to be regulated by the FDA, so it's not going to be as specific as I'd like to be.  My apologies in advance.)
  • Swanson Ultra Eyes Alive  This is probably my favorite out of all the supplements I've tried or suggested to friends.  I take it for eye health.  I started taking it because my contacts would irritate my eyes, and I've been taking it ever since.  I've since had three eye checkups and they've all been positive!
  • Multi Vitamin Energy Plus Everyone should be taking a multi-vitamin.  I suppose, if your killing your own animals and harvesting and processing all your own grains the way they did back in the settler days, maybe you could do without this one. For the rest of us, this helps to round out a diet of processed foods with less nutritional value.
  • EFA's Multi Omega 3-6-9  What don't Essential Fatty Acids do for a person these days? EFA's are good for cardiovascular maintenance, skin health, healthy joints and mental function.
  • Calcium Citrate & Vitamin D  This is a necessity for women's health. Ladies, how many times has your doctor told you about the importance of a calcium supplement?  I take this one to fulfill my bone support needs.
  • DHEA  I don't take this one regularly.  But in the winter, I start it up again to help my mood with all the cold and dreary.  The copy on the detail page says it's great for bone strength, sexual energy and overall vitality.
  • Full Spectrum Hoodia Gordonii  I take this to help with weight control. I take two before my meals.
  • Licorice Flavanoid Oil  When I was remembering to take this 3 times a day, I think it was actually helping.  I was also walking regularly then and my husband even noticed a difference.
  • Burdock Root  You may have seen my previous post on Burdock Root and Oily Skin. This is my most recent addition, and I'm hoping it helps me with my oily skin problem.  The jury is still out. Traditionally, it's been known for it's cleansing and detoxification effects.
So now you know mine, what's your regimen? Share in the comments section of this post.
