More and more research keeps pointing to the benefits of vitamin D. It’s known as the “sunshine vitamin” because of our body’s ability to manufacture it from ultraviolet light. It’s perhaps best known for its ability to promote strong and healthy bones. It’s necessary for bone growth and development. Vitamin D also aids the absorption of calcium (another strong bone essential) and phosphorus into the bloodstream and prevents the loss of calcium and phosphorus by the kidneys through urine.
A new analysis published in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at 11 trials done on vitamin D in women 65 years old and above. The women in the studies who were taking a minimum of 800 IU of vitamin D daily had fewer broken bones compared to those who didn’t. In fact, the number of broken hips was reduced by 30%. The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin D is 600 IU, but some health experts feel that this number may be too low.
