Skip the Drive-Thru Oatmeal & Make Your Own

Daily Health Tips update for May 24:

Love the convenience of instant oatmeal but hate the price tag, not to mention the high sugar content? Here’s a recipe for a homemade mix that costs pennies to make and allows you to control the amount of sugar. Plus, you can boost the health factor by using organic oatmeal and dried fruits.
  • 6 cups quick-cooking oats (or use old-fashioned oats, but pulse them in your food processor a bit)
  • 1 1/3 cups dry milk
  • 1 cup dried fruit, cut into bits (apples, apricots, strawberries, cherries, organic figs, raisins, dates, goji berries, cranberries, papaya, pineapple)
  • ¼ cup brown sugar, optional (you can omit sugar and sweeten with natural sweeteners such as stevia, organic agave syrup or maple syrup when you prepare the oatmeal)
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Store in airtight container for up to 6 months. To use, bring ½ cup water to a boil either in saucepan or microwave. Add ½ cup oatmeal mixture and stir until moistened. Let sit for 2 minutes. Stir and enjoy.
