Daily Health Tips update for August 23:
You don’t need to pay big bucks for fancy infused oils, vinegars and dessert toppings. You can save a lot of money by making your own at home and you’ll be able to use organic ingredients too. Try these three ideas to get started. (Hint: these make great gifts too.)
Herb-Infused Olive Oil
Puree ½ cup each of fresh parsley and basil, ¼ cup chives and 2 cups organic extra virgin olive oil. Let stand for 1 hour, then strain into a glass jar. Submerge 4 springs of thyme and 2 of rosemary for 3-4 weeks. Funnel into a decorative glass bottle and store in a cool, dark place. This adds great flavor to fresh green salads and sautéed veggies.
Lavender Rose Honey
Combine 1 quart honey with ¾ cup dried organic rose petals and ½ cup dried lavender flowers. Seal and let stand in a sunny window for 2 weeks. Warm the jar under hot water until the honey is fluid; strain into a clean jar. Store in a cool, dark place. This is fantastic in tea, on biscuits or drizzled over pound cake and fresh fruit.
