Supplements Beat the Sun for Vitamin D Boost

The sunshine vitamin has been making headlines for quite some time.  Vitamin D plays a critical role in the overall health of our bodies, especially our bones.  Whether you are young or old, vitamin D should be included in your supplement routine.

A new study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology concluded that vitamin D supplements are the safest way to increase your vitamin D levels.  The study focused on estimated vitamin D production from the sun (the most basic vitamin D source) versus oral supplementation.

We all know the damaging effects that the sun can have on our bodies, and the risks outweigh the benefits.  It is estimated that over 1.5 million people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year in the United States.  Sunscreen use is critical for you and your family’s long term health.

In our household, we always use sunscreen, and faithfully take our vitamin D supplements.  This new study reinforces that practices that many of us already have in place.  Oral vitamin D supplements are a smart and safe vitamin D source.
