New Products Review with Lee Swanson: 2 New Breakthroughs in Anti-Aging Research

Monday, July 1, 2013 by Lee Swanson

Dear Friends and Valued Customers:

It’s time once again for us to take a look at the new products we’ve been working hard on developing for you. July’s theme seems to be all about anti-aging, as three of our newest products (two are all-new, one is new and improved)  are harnessing some very fascinating new research findings about how our bodies age and what we can do to promote optimized health and quality of life as we age.

First up, I’m proud to present two new super nutrients for healthy aging at the cellular level. Based on groundbreaking research and new understanding of the mechanisms of age-related decline, these cutting-edge nutraceuticals support health and wellness in ways we could never have imagined just a decade ago.

Dr. Derrick DeSilva, a long-time partner of Swanson Health Products®, brings us a maximum potency PQQ supplement, a truly cutting-edge nutritional discovery that the journal Nature called the “1st New Vitamin in 55 Years.” While it has yet to be classified as a true vitamin, PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) is widely accepted as a relative to the B-vitamin family that holds the potential to help us maintain healthy mental function as we age. I urge you to read my exclusive interview with Dr. DeSilva, who introduced me to PQQ years ago when the science was just emerging. I’m so thankful to Dr. DeSilva for bringing us this remarkable new super nutrient that truly has the power to change our lives.

Next is my personally formulated Telomere Advantage Cellular Longevity Formula. Cutting-edge research suggests that telomeres—short little strands of DNA found at the end of our chromosomes—may hold the secret to long life. By supporting healthy telomeres, scientists suggest, we may be able to prolong our lifespan. I’ve been absolutely riveted by this topic, and I scoured the research to put together this no-frills approach to telomere support.

Also this month we present a new and improved version of our best-selling Youth Tissue Extract from renowned Norwegian physician, Dr. Bjodne Eskeland. This popular product was rendered unavailable after supply of its key ingredient fell short. Now it’s back with a new and improved version of the key oligopeptide ingredient that made it a favorite among thousands of Swanson® customers who realized remarkable revitalizing benefits from this unique, natural product.

More products new this month include:

  • Reduced Sodium Himalayan Crystal Salt—same health benefits of natural crystal salt now with 50% less sodium to fit your dietary needs
  • Schuessler Cell Salts—brings together all 12 of Dr. William H. Schuessler’s homeopathic cell salts into one comprehensive formula to nourish your body’s natural balance and defenses
  • Castor Oil Softgels w/ Peppermint—liquid organic castor oil combined with organic peppermint to make enjoying the time-tested benefits of castor oil a whole lot more palatable
  • Full Spectrum Oat Straw (as seen on TV)—a favorite all-natural energy-booster among herbalists, also well-known for its bountiful vitamin and mineral content
  • Double-Potency Suntheanine®—get twice the support of this natural calming and relaxing amino acid (serving size based on clinical research)

As always, I wish you the very best of health,

Lee Swanson

Triphala: Popular Ayurvedic Supplement for Detox & Weight Loss

Friday, May 3, 2013 by Anthony N.

What is Triphala?

Recently, the buzz surrounding this supplement has picked up quite a bit. Despite a similar sounding name, triphala does not come from Truffula Trees. :)

Instead triphala or triphala fruit is an ayurvedic herbal formula that contains the following three (tri-phala) fruits.

1) Amla or Amalaki - This fruit is commonly known as Indian Gooseberry and comes from the deciduous tree, Phyllanthus emblica. A good source of antioxidants, it has been studied for potential benefits for the health of bones, the pancreas, cholesterol levels and more.

2) Behada - In Southeast Asia, you can find the Terminalia bellirica tree. "Bibhitaki" is how the fruit form of this tree is known in traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, where it has been traditionally used for healthy plasma, muscle and bones.

3) Harada -  The small nutlike fruit on the Terminalia chebula tree is used for its beneficial effects for just about everything: Ayurvedic and Tibetan traditions regard it as a universal panacea.

Triphala Benefits

Triphala is commonly known for its digestive benefits, particularly its ability to help cleanse the body. The customer reviews on our site tout the product's ability to help you "stay regular."

Triphala for Weight Loss

Recently, doctors on TV shows have featured Triphala in segments about weight loss. A healthy digestive system and elimination processes can be two important parts of a healthy weight loss plan.

Anytime you are looking to lose weight, we always recommend you start with a healthy diet and exercise. If you are looking for a weight loss supplement to help you out, talk to your doctor to see what might be a good fit for you.

How Much Triphala Should I Take?

Dosage is a common question for someone looking to try a triphala supplement. If you're taking a standardized extract, one 250 mg capsule per day is sufficient. If you are taking the Swanson Premium product, the recommended dosage is 1,000 mg (two 500 mg caps), 2-3 times per day.

One of the best features of triphala is that it is safe for everyday use.

Triphala Reviews

Customer reviews for Triphala on the Swanson website are quite positive. There are currently 14 triphala products on our site and all of them maintain at least a 3/5 rating. Many of these products have the full 5/5 rating, too!

The Detox Diet with Dr. Alejandro Junger – As Seen on The Dr. Oz Show

Monday, February 18, 2013 by Kayla M

A few days ago, I watched The Dr. Oz Show and the topic that day peaked my interest.  Dr. Oz’s guest that day was Dr. Alejandro Junger, the author of Clean, The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself, who was introducing what they called the “Detox Diet”.

What caught my attention was that this detoxing program was actually a food program that promotes weight loss. Most of the detoxing programs I had heard of in the past involved consuming very little food as a way to rid the body of harmful toxins.

While the Detox Diet does call for the elimination of some food, it is centered around ten specific types of food that Dr. Junger says flushes the fat out of the intestines. This plan is used as a diet program to promote weight loss. Dr. Junger says the weight loss is a result of the bacteria balance in the gut. He calls for eliminating foods that feed bad bacteria in the intestines, which increases the amount of good bacteria, resulting in lost weight.

>>>READ: 3 Cleansing Myths Debunked!

Foods to Eliminate in the Detox Diet:

  • Dairy and egg
  • Gluten
  • Processed sugar
  • Coffee, soda and alcohol
  • Beef and pork
  • Creamed vegetables
  • Peanuts

This list may make it seem like the majority of things you eat on a daily basis need to be tossed out. So what’s left to eat? Plenty!  By building your meals around these specific foods, you’ll look good on the outside and feel good on the inside.

10 Foods in the Detox Diet:

  1. Green, leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables (for example spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower )
  2. Cold water fish (like salmon and tuna)
  3. Free range, pasture chicken
  4. Fresh berries (things like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries)
  5. Apple cider vinegar
  6. Water with lemon
  7. Herbal teas
  8. Unsweetened coconut milk
  9. Coconut oil
  10. Plant-based protein powder

Garcinia Cambogia for Weight Loss: Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) Levels Are Key

Tuesday, October 30, 2012 by Ben H

Garcinia cambogia supplement
Garcinia cambogia is another rock star weight loss supplement that is beginning to get some widespread recognition alongside the likes of other well-known supplements like Green Coffee Bean, Safslim, PGX and Raspberry Ketones. If you’re just hearing about it now on TV or the radio for the first time, let’s take a closer look at this potential weight management supplement...and what you should be looking for—HCA percentage, for example—when buying a garcinia extract supplement.

What Is Garcinia Cambogia?

The Garcinia cambogia tree is actually an evergreen tree found in the tropical regions of Asia. It has pumpkin-shaped fruit that is about the same size of a typical orange. Usually yellow or red in color, the garcinia fruit is usually too acidic to be eaten straight off the tree, but it is often used as a spice.

However, despite its acidity, garcinia fruit itself has been used throughout tropical Asia. In Thai and Indian cuisines, for example, it’s used in curries and other dishes as a condiment, often in place of limes or tamarinds. Garcinia also has roots in Ayurveda, where it’s been used traditionally for digestive support.

But modern herbalists and natural health practitioners are finding it has even more value. New findings and first-hand accounts are showing garcinia cambogia extract may be useful in promoting healthy weight loss by maintaining healthy appetite control.

Garcinia Extract for Weight Loss

Super Citrimax 60% HCA
The real buzz about garcinia supplements has to do with one key constituent: hydroxycitric acid, or HCA. The rind of garcinia fruit is made up of anywhere from 16 to 30 percent HCA, along with other citric acids you might find in other fruit.

This HCA content appears to be the key to garcinia’s potential weight loss benefits when combined with healthy diet and exercise. In vitro studies have demonstrated that HCA may inhibit the activity of a specific enzyme that is involved in the conversion of sugar in to fat. (Read more in our health library.)

Experts recommend looking for a garcinia supplement with 60% HCA content for effective supplementation in regards to healthy weight management—See Super CitriMax Clinical Strength with 60% HCA concentration for reliable effectiveness.
