A Chicken Strip Lover’s Take on Health

Meet Kayla

Hello, my name is Kayla and I’m a chicken strip-aholic. Breaded bites of poultry, fried and dipped in ranch dressing is my usual order at any restaurant. Being a writer for Swanson Health Products, I’ve been exposed to the importance of health and wellness.  So while delicious, my unhealthy love of chicken strips/nuggets/fingers is something I’m working to overcome. Since there aren’t any Chicken Strips Anonymous groups in my area, I’m going it alone. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to give up my favorite dish completely, but I’m hoping being surrounded by health on a daily basis will inspire me to incorporate nutrition into my life. A self-described newshound, I’m on the health beat, ready to report on interesting health stories and give you my take on the health news that affects you.

Behind the Scenes with SHP’s Chefs!

Did you know that the recipe emails that we send out twice a month have been tested by Swanson employees? In order to make sure we’re giving you great tasting, quality recipes, we make them ourselves. Now, it can get a little crazy in the kitchen because we typically make between four and six recipes at a time!

Earlier this month, we were back at it! This time, four self-proclaimed chef’s from the Swanson Web Team made a salad, bread, beverage, snack and dip – all in under six hours! The Swanson Kitchen is actually at my house, so we don’t disturb our coworkers by hogging the kitchen break room at the office.

Getting Started

Step one was doing some grocery shopping. We got most of our ingredients from our own shelves at Swanson, except for some fresh fruits and vegetables. Can you guess what we'll be making from all these ingredients? I'll keep you in suspense for now, but you know with Bob's Red Mill All Purpose Baking Flour, Nature's All Foods Organic Blueberries, Swanson Tart Cherry Juice and more, it's bound to be good.

Start Cooking!

With five recipes to make in one day, there wasn't a lot of time to waste. Because there were four of us cooking, we each took charge of our own recipes, but worked together to make the first recipe. The first of the day was our homemade fruit snacks. We were all very curious to see how these little gummies would turn out. Although a bit labor intensive, the recipe is simple and you can vary the flavors by changing up your fresh fruit and fruit juice selections. Using Swanson Tart Cherry, Jarrow Pomegranate and Bernard Jensen Grape juices, you'll be surprised with the flavors combinations came up with!

Our second recipe of the day falls under our Bread category. This is the recipe that uses Nature's All Foods Organic Blueberries. This breakfast bread also features Swanson Organic Milled Flaxseed and Bob's Red Mill Rolled Oats. It bakes up into a sweet, filling biscuit that keeps you going all morning.

The next recipe was a flavorful, chunky dip that tastes great on crackers and breads. It was made with a mixture of fresh vegetables, including onions, celery and fennel. Thanks to seasonings from Swanson, it's super flavorful. Doesn't it look delicious as it's sauteeing? As you can see in the images, we're multi-taskers on cooking day. The kettles and blender were being used to make our fruit snacks at the same time!

The next recipe might be my favorite of the day. This bright kale salad also includes fresh veggies like red pepper, cucumber, onion, radishes and celery. A light dressing features Swanson Organic Avocado Oil and Now Foods Maple Syrup (for a little sweetness). Look at those colors pop. Isn't this salad pretty? (And it's pretty good, too!)

The final recipe we made goes under the beverage category. The sweet drink features Woodstock Turbinado Sugar and Swanson Tart Cherry and Black Cherry juices. Any guesses what it is? Here's a hint: this recipe will arrive in your inbox on May 5th!

After a successful day of cooking, all of our recipes turned out deliciously. We even brought some back to the office to share, so they are all Web Team Approved! These healthy recipes will be sent out over the next couple months. Be sure you're signed up to receive recipe emails from Swanson Health Products, so you don't miss out on all the delectable goodness! And one more thing... any volunteers to do the dishes?

The Detox Diet with Dr. Alejandro Junger – As Seen on The Dr. Oz Show

Monday, February 18, 2013 by Kayla M

A few days ago, I watched The Dr. Oz Show and the topic that day peaked my interest.  Dr. Oz’s guest that day was Dr. Alejandro Junger, the author of Clean, The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself, who was introducing what they called the “Detox Diet”.

What caught my attention was that this detoxing program was actually a food program that promotes weight loss. Most of the detoxing programs I had heard of in the past involved consuming very little food as a way to rid the body of harmful toxins.

While the Detox Diet does call for the elimination of some food, it is centered around ten specific types of food that Dr. Junger says flushes the fat out of the intestines. This plan is used as a diet program to promote weight loss. Dr. Junger says the weight loss is a result of the bacteria balance in the gut. He calls for eliminating foods that feed bad bacteria in the intestines, which increases the amount of good bacteria, resulting in lost weight.

Foods to Eliminate in the Detox Diet:

  • Dairy and egg
  • Gluten
  • Processed sugar
  • Coffee, soda and alcohol
  • Beef and pork
  • Creamed vegetables
  • Peanuts

This list may make it seem like the majority of things you eat on a daily basis need to be tossed out. So what’s left to eat? Plenty!  By building your meals around these specific foods, you’ll look good on the outside and feel good on the inside.

10 Foods in the Detox Diet:

  1. Green, leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables (for example spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower )
  2. Cold water fish (like salmon and tuna)
  3. Free range, pasture chicken
  4. Fresh berries (things like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries)
  5. Apple cider vinegar
  6. Water with lemon
  7. Herbal teas
  8. Unsweetened coconut milk
  9. Coconut oil
  10. Plant-based protein powder

My Argan Oil Hair Care and Skincare Trial – Change is a Good Thing

Friday, January 25, 2013 by Kayla M

I must admit that when I was asked to try Swanson Health Products’ new argan oil products, I was a bit skeptical. After all, I haven’t switched hair care or lotion brands in years and I wasn’t sure if my hair and skin would be okay with change (even though I knew it is good to rotate shampoos). I was given Swanson Premium’s Argan Oil shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner spray, night cream and hand lotion to try. Two of the products, the leave-in conditioner spray and the hand lotion, are brand new. The other argan oil products I have never tried.

I started with the hair products, prepared to give my trial at least one week. With my history of bad hair days, I didn’t want to blame the new hair routine if it happened to begin on one of my need-a-cap or ponytail days. When I’m asked what hair type I have, I classify it as stubborn. No matter how much I comb it, straighten it, brush it or scream at it in the mirror, it does what it wants, when it wants. It’s thick, colored and heat damaged. I have been using a salon brand of shampoo and conditioner and was curious to see how the Swanson line would compare.

  • Swanson Premium Argan Oil 97% Natural Shampoo  (SW1485) One thing that worried me about switching to argan oil shampoo was that it would leave my hair oily. Quite the opposite! It left my hair clean without weighing it down or leaving behind any greasy residue. With a light, fresh scent, it’s a smell both women and men will approve of.
  • Swanson Premium Argan Oil 90% Natural Conditioner  (SW1471) My hair tangles extremely easy, so conditioning is a must for me. Swanson Argan Oil Conditioner passed this test flawlessly. It hydrates my hair, without leaving it oily. And I didn’t need a big gob of it either. Just a little bit of this conditioner goes a long way. I did follow the directions and left it on for a few minutes before rinsing out. Once I got out of the shower, it was very easy to comb through.
  • Swanson Premium Argan Oil Leave-In Conditioner Spray  (SW1495) New this month at Swanson is the Argan Oil Leave-In Conditioner Spray. I also tried this out. It’s a very light conditioning spray that I spritzed onto the ends of my hair for extra hydration before I blow drying it.

After my trial run, I discovered my hair really likes argan oil! After using the three argan oil hair care products, my hair was left soft and easy to comb through and style. With Swanson Argan Oil hair care, I can treat my hair to salon quality products without the sticker price. In fact, I save about $10 per bottle compared to the brand of shampoo and conditioner I had been using.

I also had the opportunity to try two more Swanson Argan Oil products for skin care:

Swanson Premium Argan Oil 95% Natural Moisturizing Night Cream (SW1473) Once again, I was fooled by the “oil” in the name, thinking this moisturizing cream would leave my skin oilier than normal. I replaced my regular nighttime moisturize with the Swanson Argan Oil Moisturizing Night Cream with great results. This cream soothed my skin and helped rid it of dry, patches and was friendly to my sensitive skin.

Swanson Premium Argan Oil 95% Natural Hand Lotion (SW1516) Also new this month at SwansonVitamins.com is Argan Oil Hand Lotion. Where I live in North Dakota, the cold winters are especially harsh on skin. This lightweight lotion gave my skin a much-needed drink and leaves it baby-soft. It has no scent and the bottle isn’t too big, so you ladies can fit it into your purse.

My one week trial of argan oil has stretched into more than two and I’m not turning back. All the argan oil products are keepers! Not only are the formulas impressive, but so are the prices. I love that I can get salon and designer quality products at an everyday low price. Change can be good — I’m sure that once you give these products a try, you’ll love them as much as I do!
