In this case, the bark of barberry roots proves to be a natural source of alkaloids, the most active of which is berberine. Berberine-containing plants have historically been given to support the body's ability to detox. Barberry bark has also been a long-time favorite for supporting bowel regularity and soothing the occasional and mild bout of stomach or bowel discomfort.
