An aspartame-free sugar substitute from NOW Foods. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is naturally present in small amounts in various fruits and vegetables. The Finnish name for Xylitol is "koivusokeri," or birch sugar, a reference to the extraction of Xylitol from birch bark. Considerable amounts of Xylitol are formed in the body every day as a result of normal metabolic processes. Although it is classified as a carbohydrate, this sweet crystalline substance is slowly absorbed from the digestive tract and does not cause rapid rises in blood glucose. In addition, the caloric impact of Xylitol is typically about 40% lower than other carbohydrates, making it a healthy addition to any diet. Contains no salt, yeast, wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, shellfish, preservatives, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or artificial sweeteners.

This is Fabulous I use this sweetener in everything. I also use it in baking. I contacted the company about the source of the xylitol, and they told me it was from non-GMO corn cobs. They also test the xylitol to make sure that it is non-GMO. I used it to make Dr. Andrew Weil's Banana Nut Bread. Instead of the canola oil, (canola is GMO or a genetically modified organism), I used organic applesauce. Instead of the half cup of honey, I used 1Tb of honey and 6 packets of Xylitol Plus. Instead of transfat laden and GMO containing flavored coffee creamers, I use Xylitol Plus and vanilla extract in my coffee. It's better than those artificially flavored coffee creamers. At Whole Foods Market, they are selling this product for almost $9. Can you say whole paycheck? It's also more expensive on amazon. The BEST This is the best sweetener ever made and I have tried most of them. Something about xylitol with the stevia makes a perfect combination for sweetening whatever (sometimes straight stevia is a bit cloying). For iced tea in particular this is absolutely the BOMB. i prefer this over stevia This has a nice natural sweet taste and can be used in cooking as a suagr substitute. I like it a lot better than stevia which is too sweet for me. Try it. November 12, 2010
